Hi, I was recently wondering how many .com's were registered in 2007 versus 2006 versus 2005, ... 1996 etc. I realize millions of domains are registered and dropped each year, but ideally I would love to see a sheet that (even loosely) says:
1996: 475
1997: 2,934
1998: 68,000
...
2005: 38,000,000
2006: 45,000,000
2007: 55,000,000
Which might show how many active domains there were on the 1st of the year. (or average, or high numbers for the year)
I'm mostly wondering DotCom - but info on all others would be great too. No specific reason wondering - mostly curious.

Actually this is very close information to what I was looking for. This shows (my guesstimates from looking at the charts)
DotCom
2003: 25,000,000
2004: 32,000,000
2005: 42,000,000
2006: 55,000,000
Total (com, net, org, name, biz, eu, info, uk, de, and other)
2003: 60,000,000
2004: 64,000,000
2005: 91,000,000
2006: 121,000,000

Going directly to the source of the data from above, I summarized the first entry for the year and added a % growth calculation on the DotComs...
http://www.zooknic.com/Domains/counts.html
2007: 66,158,333 (1.43% -this is current data, from 4/29/07 *)
2006: 46,233,988 (1.38% growth)
2005: 33,351,738 (1.27% growth)
2004: 26,207,928 (1.18% growth)
2003: 22,147,502 (0.97% growth)
2002: 22,746,754 (1.08% growth)
2001: 21,023,720 (2.62% growth)
2000: 8,006,100 (2.33% growth)
1999: 3,425,625 (1.82% growth)
1998: 1,879,501 (2.26% growth)
= from here on, all TLDs are tracked, not perfect. (above is .com only)
1997: 828,000 (3.45% growth)
1996: 240,000 (3.38% growth)
1995: 71,000 (2.36% growth)
1994: 30,000 (1.42% growth)
1993: 21,000 (1.31% growth)
1992: 16,000 (x.xx% growth)
Not perfect, but a good ballpark I think. Interesting data to see anyway.
