For Sale drop times

I just (8pm GMT) registered a .com domain that was
due to drop tomorrow(?). BUT - when I checked
1 hour ago it was still occupied (and still lists in
whois with the old registrar).
I always took the 6am drop time for solid law - or did
verisign change that recently?

Not necessarily. Many drop earlier or later than 2pm.

The drop time also depends on the registrar. Network Solutions does drop most of their names between 2PM and 3PM but they also seem to have sporadic smaller drops throughout the day.
