There are restrictions on registering .edu domain
http://www.educause.edu/edudomain/

1. 
   Find out if the name you want is available.

• Verify that your institution is on the list of eligible institutions, or if you are a system/district office complete the application form.

• Agree to the EDUCAUSE Customer Service Agreement.

• Provide a password that you will use to manage your account.

• Provide Administrative Contact, Technical Contact, and Domain Name Server information.

But if want not top level domain .edu there are some countries where there is no limitation like with pure .edu.

For example in poland you can easily register xxxxxxxx.edu.pl domain.

Some person on the other forum is selling a one word .edu for around 50k

It is a real pain in ass to register .edu. I contacted the operator to find out if I can register a name there for a local state university. Big one and well-known one. I was said not becuase the university is not on their list
