If you bid at NW $ 8,000 and (using your scenerio) BuyDomains bids $ 10,000. NW would end up with $ 3,000 instead of your $ 8,000.

I doubt they give a discount. But, they may have a direct line of communications so NW puts ALL of their effort into getting the name.

But, even that, is probably not the case.
