For Sale expiration date and status

is there a way to figure out true status and expiration dates.

i have seen many names - including my own - that have gone from expiration dates of the current month to next year or beyond and still say active status. since the domains that i have not paid for have done this , how is it possible to tell which names have been really renewed and which have not. do we have to wait for it to finally say redemption period or pending delte or do u just have to guess if u want to try a snap.
