Yellow Pages profits up 34%, extends reach into online

The use of online and print directories is growing with Canadians, a trend Yellow Pages Group plans to capitalize on and also strengthen with possible acquisitions.

?Unlike some other forms of media, the directory category is growing,? CEO Marc Tellier said Tuesday as the Yellow Pages income fund posted healthy returns.

Tellier said at the unitholders? annual meeting that 76% of Canadians have used an online or print directory in the past month.

?What this means is that usage of print directories remains strong and stable, while the number of visitors to our online properties continues to grow,? he said. The acquisition of Advertising Directory Solutions Holdings Inc. earlier this month and strong organic growth pushed Yellow Pages? first-quarter profits 34% higher to $85.2 million, the directory company reported.

Yellow Pages said its profit amounted to 17 cents per unit, compared with net income of $63.7 million a year ago, or 19 cents per unit on fewer units before the acquisition.

Tellier said later at a news conference there are potential opportunities to acquire telephone directory books in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

He also announced the recent acquisition of 389 domain names targeting a wide range of consumer categories from Emall.ca, owner of an array of dot.ca names.

?The online search market is evolving rapidly and we are moving quickly to help ensure we are well positioned to grow our share of this market in Canada.? The $2.5-million acquisition included names such as autos.ca, taxis.ca, maps.ca, attorneys.ca and doctors.ca.

Tellier told the news conference that Canadians who use attorneys.ca, for example, would be able to get information on how to select an attorney and fee schedules. Eventually the domain names could include lists of profession

als who would be available, he added.

maps.ca is a killer name. You don't have to be a Canadian to get the gravity of those names.

Bargain price for the buyer.. seller can't be faulted for taking money off the table.
