Through an amazing coincidence, I looked up a domain that showed up as registered that same day (27th). It never resolved - today it's deleted (shows up as "reserved" at WHOIS.sc with no contact info). I don't recall the registrar but it was some obscure one.

Is this a case of a test-and-dump registration?

Trust me, the winner is very reliable.
But back on topic. Which registrars are known to do this type of traffic test registrations?

I believe so. Isn't there a penalty by the Registry for this practice?

Could it be an error at whois.sc? They're not 100% accurate.

I'm not sure, but it's been happening for a couple of months now, so I'm guessing that there is no penalty, or the registry doesn't care (i.e. some domains are being kept, and this number is reasonably high, so they're getting a few $$$ out of it). Or they're not paying attention..

No, the domain did not even show in WHOIS.sc the date of its registration. It showed no prior registration. But it was taken - said so in Enom's registration lookup and then on the 28th using unix whois command mode. Then on the 29th, it was gone.

Theo,

ICANN allows these temporary registrations at like a $2 penalty (i.e.: if you cancel, instead of it costing the registrar $6.00 it will cost them $2 if they simply delete the domain within 3 days.

Mainstream registrars consider this practice too much of a hassle -- i've done it at eNom once before, but it took a few trouble tickets for 1 domain. ;)

The question is, does the Registy HAVE to comply to a deletion request within 3 days? Also, Merlin, did you pay Enom for this or did you receive a refund?
