For Sale Help with expired domain name!

I have a customer thats domain name expired with his registrar.
They are trying to charge him $150.00 to renew it now. Is this normal procedure?
What can I do to help him, I think his host is trying to pull one over on him?!
I checked to see if the name was available, but it is not through whois. Is there a way to grab this name from them?
It is not even a good name, and I think it is only a 6 letter acronym.
Please help!!!!

It's going through the redemption period? Check the WHOIS output. If so, the Registrar will charge that fee to re-instate the domain before it expires. Or you can let it expire in 30 days and re-register it.

The $150 is new, but the registrar does not get most of it. It's a penalty for letting a domain expire - but only the domain owner can pay it before the domain expires.

If you don't think the name will go instantly once deleted, it
would be a good idea to do a snapnames. Plus, have a
couple guys also helping you secure it. (But, you have to
trust them and they have to trust you.)

Unfortunately, this guy is out of business until the name is
released. So, maybe he should buy another name and start
using it. And, make a decision later on if he wants to switch
back. Or, keep both names.

It is definitely a pain in the butt.com for him and you since
you are trying to help.

Can I request a transfer for the domain name?
Will they let it go that way?

Transfers can't be performed in REDEMPTION-PERIOD.

I had trouble at NameScout with something similar.

My domain was not in REDEMPTION-PERIOD, and I could still transfer the domain away - I initiated the transfer at the receiving Registrar, but the damn NameScout put a registry lock on, and refused to remove it.
Then, after contacting them, they suddenly put it into REDEMPTION-PERIOD, and now I can't retrieve my domain without paying some ridiculous fee.

Suffice to say, I just slapped it on NameWinner for the 8.95 fee.

I had two names expire from 123-reg.com and I got a letter from nominet saying to reactivate them would cost £94 each

I know its a pain, but if his business depends upon the domain, why not pay the $150 and chalk it up to experience.
