How do the "pros" hand-reg? or do they at all?

Just curious, do you have a systematic approach?

I think beginners should concentrate on the aftermarket (auctions, drops, forum, etc.) and especially names at auction where there is more than one person interested. At least this way, you know at least one or more domainers saw some value in the name.

If I see something new or have a niche I am working on, I will do some Google adwords searching and export some top keywords to Excel, where I convert them into domain form and then search at the registrar to see what is available. Just don't go crazy on hand regs. There are some decent finds and flips sometimes, and it is like the lottery, but about the same odds.

I also keep a list of names that I thought would be decent hand regs, and when I have a little extra cash, or find a really cheap coupon at GoDaddy, I will pluck a few off the list.

The pros do hand-reg. Mike Mann registered 14,962 fresh names last week, for instance.

some register names,

one at a time

and some register in bulk

some register domains based on a hunch

that they thought of

when they went out for lunch

some register names of things to come

and some register names that never will

still...

the systematic approach is to budget

based on initial capital, and return on investments

:)

If something comes to mind and it's available, I hand-reg it.

I still handreg, from time to time, often looking at recent drops, based on certain keywords and topics of personal interest.

Yes, but you still have to read, understand and use your brains otherwise you're sheep following the herd :D

Same here, several times a day I think of something and I check if it's taken in .com and other extensions.
