how to find if a domain ever expired

when looking at a domains whois, is the creation date the day it was regged?
even is so how can you tell if it has expired

is there any tool for that?

google.com (name may appear in past drop lists)
domaintools.com domain history (paid service)

You are correct, the creation date is the day it was registered.

You can look at 'Registrar History' on whois.domaintools.com. It states whether, and the amount of times, the domain has been dropped.
