"Andrew Newton, a research engineer in Verisign's Naming and Directory Services division and former co-chair if the Internet Engineering Task Force MARID working group, has taken a look at the The preliminary ICANN report on Whois Privacy. His initial reaction? It's a joke.
ICANN can't afford to let European orgs deal with Whois according to EU privacy rules, Newton opines, because it would hurt Americans. And ICANN can't let US registrars and registries fall in line with EU directives, because the muscular Intellectual Property lobby won't allow it. In fact, the Intellectual Property crew seems to be the oomph behind ICANN's new push into regulating Whois after all these years.
Newton says, "What should be questioned is the purpose for having ICANN."
Anybody getting the impression he's not impressed? "
