Link is below but a little slow, so I post extract from James Seng on the success of Tokyo University IDN:

Nakayama-sensei from Tokyo University shared a very pleasant story with me this morning.

They runs a popular site called Live Eclipse that keeps track of eclipse schedule. The site also have an Japanese IDN 日食中継.jp which they publise concurrently.

On the last eclipse, 9th April, they have over 2m hits in a single day. The interesting part is 15.8%, or over 400k of the hits comes from the IDN name 日食中継.jp. This is very surprising because the data we have in the past shows very little (less then 1%) utilization of IDN. This maybe the coming of age for IDN :)

(Please bear in mind that 15.8% resolution is despite the fact that IE still don't have IDN support - Michel told me it will be in IE 6 beta 2 ie in IE 7 release.)

It would seem that this was a properly run experiment with the Japanese Registry.

Use Google Language Tool to translate page.

It would seem that the Japanese see this as irrefutable proof of the the validity of the IDN concept.

Frightening revelation, drix. And a reminder that the world is inherently very diverse, that the romanised characters we use linguistically serves only a restricted part of the world's population on the main.

Do you know where can we buy the official IDN for China? It's better late, than way too late... When IE 7.0 starts moving, it probably will be.

The best place I know currently for registering IDN is www.Domainsite.com which supports not only Dot Com and Dot Net but also Dot CN. Dot JP will cost you an arm and leg and is less widely available. I have IDNs at Directi.com, which I transferred in and they work, but if you talk to their helpline the guy at the other end will tell you that they don't support them yet.

Actually, the adoption of IDN support at Domainsite was largely at my instigation. I'm well known there!

I would recommend as ever sticking with dot com. The first level issues with gTLD will take a little longer to resolve, but the domains are a quarter of the price of Dot CN, and the Chinese probably use dot com a lot more than dot CN, even with IDN.
