If I want to protect LLNEWS.com, how would I file for TM

I have a xxNEWS.com (replace xx with state initials e.g. PA, NJ, NY, LA etc.)
I want to launch the website and also want to protect my domain name from big players in the field.
Can I even file for trademark for something so generic?
How do you protect something generic like that?
