if you look at some of the those big name sales, most owners held the names for years before they sold

I agree with that, you must be patient but more importantly you must have time to wait. I have a couple I know people are after now, I must wait until they really want them.

Keyword vs Branded.

A brandable word is good but will take longer to sell than a keyword domain.

End users are generally clueless about the value of keyword domains however, you're much better off developing them and selling the leads you get (or driving affiliate traffic).

The end user your selling the most leads to will want to buy it from you for a multiplier (go for 5 to 10X minimum)

End user sales is where the money is full stop.

Domains like RingBinders.net, TrainHorn.net, Investment-Property.net have maybe $xx reseller value. But end users will pay $500 to $800 (or more) for these kind of domains. I know because I sell these kind of domains every single day to end users.
Keywords related to products/services are gems 'cause they have an abundance of potential end users.
