I have been out of the domain name game awhile, so I was taken back when I attempted to renew a domain name that expired two weeks ago at NameScout.com. They told me it would cost me 175.00 to "recover" the name. They claim it is Verisign getting the cash not them. I just renewed two names with NmaeBargain.com (expired more than two weeks) Is this some kind of joke or what?

I think that is somewhere near the standard price for recovering a name from Redemption Period.

It is a bit of a con - I've had domains at NameBargain expired for OVER A MONTH and I still managed to renew them fine.

One can't help but wonder that Verisign introduced this Redemption Period, not out of goodwill, but to make a fast buck.

Fast Buck..... but more importantly to prohibit people form contacting expiring holders. Part of The redemption is a removing of the data from whois, so you cant call the old owner and have them redeem, and then buy name from them.

I also beleive this allows verisign to mask the true redemption date and who the name goes to.
