Hello, I am new to domain names.

Can anyone who knows explain to me the relationships between the three organizations:
* Network Solutions
* ICANN
* VeriSign

How have they evolved over time? What is there present status? Who holds the most power?

Thanks,
David

Netsol (Network Solutions) is owned by Verisign.

Verisign/Netsol operate the registry for .com/.net/.org domains and also a registrar for the above and several other gtld/cctld's. Technically the registry and registrar are different entities.

ICANN is supposed to look after the Internet Infrastructure and also deals with issues like domain dispute policies. Their website is at www.icann.org

ICANN holds the most power as governing body for gTLDs, of which Netsol aka Verisign is part.

Nonetheless Verisign is taking a real beating on the stock market and one wonders if they have any 'power' left.
