Before I got into domaining as a hobby, I needed a domain, and some hosting. A simple Google search returned 1and1 as an option. They were quite cheap at the time, so I decided to go with them.

When I started domaining as a hobby, I realised there were plenty of companies out there that were a lot better than 1and1, and so cancelled my account, and moved onto someone else.

This was late 2008. In mid 2009, I started getting emails from them saying I owe them so much money. I contacted the billing dept and they confirmed my account was closed, I didn't have anything to pay, and I shouldn't get anymore emails.

Well, I didn't get anymore emails... But I got a letter! From a financing company, saying I now owe them so much, plus their fee!

They really are a bunch of incompetent dopes, I've emailed both the financing company and 1and1, so hopefully it should be settled without me having to pay anything.

But I want to advise people not to go with 1and1... don't even think about it for a second! In my short experience with them, they're useless.

You still owe them yearly package fees even if you transfer the domain. If you don't pay a collection agency may be after you which is usually what happens.

I was emailed in November saying I didn't owe them anything. If the billing dept have got it wrong, I will pay. But I'm not paying for their errors.

1&1 renewed about 20 domains I canceled over a month in advance (including confirming the cancellation). I left them over that and never went back.

They spend all their money on 2-4 page ads in magazines and not customer service.

1 and 1 has got to be the WORST COMPANY EVER. Stay away from them. They will milk you for all you are worth.
