I suspect you are not thinking like a regular Internet user.
I guess people close to the Internet tend to see TLDs after .com as merging together in their minds. I saw a post here the other day from Adam which talked to executive awareness of the .info tld. It was something over 70%. While that is pretty good, I think you would find the .org brand would come out better.
In the US it really is .com / .net and .org - when you think about it, you really don't often see a .us or any other tld promoted in commercial media.
