i bought a .org and started developing the website. A friend I sent the url to responded by forwarding me a tax form for resigstering a nonprofit. She tells me I can't operate the website without filing this form?

Is that right? i didn't hear any of this from anybody in the beginning stages, and i can't find anything online restricting use of the domain name from building a site.

Has this been discussed before?

They are two separate things.

You can use the .org for non-profit or profit site.
The tax form has nothing to do with the domain name.

Consult with your CPA for the tax question.

Your friend is wrong. That restriction does not exist on .org owners.

Just tell her she can't be your friend without getting her sheet straight.

No restriction on the .org but if you are claiming to be a non-profit organization, that is a designated legal entity just like a corporation. You can't just say you are John Doe Inc. without the proper papers. Same with a non-profit organization.

Just do not claim to be a non-profit organization (or corporation) and you can do the same on a .org just as you would on .com.
