Here are a couple of related names I picked up today. Huge industry of course and these have good search numbers. If .US continues to make progress, these would appear to be strong for an online photo processing company or supplier of photo lab equipment. What do you think?

Nice ones for a very large industry! I lot of good names still available. I picked up ComputerAnimation.us a few days ago.

Good luck Duke!

No way! ComputerAnimation.us was unregistered? Can't believe I never looked for that. Congrats to you too Kim.

Those are great in that they are very generic, but bad in that they are too long. There are hundreds of these type of names sitting idle in the .com/.net/.org arena.

How does a popular type-in (photo finishing maybe) translate to a generic domain name? Search engine placement is the most important, and domain name doesn't matter here.

Today's value:
Photofinishing.US = $45-$200
FilmProcessing.US = $90-$400

Just MHO :)

Good Luck!

Thanks guys. I was guessing today's retail value might be around $75-$100 (right about where Dr. Who & Mudfence pegged them). If .US comes into its own then they have a chance to do much better down the line. As for length they hit the outer limit of what I will normally accept at 14 letters each, but I thought they were strong enough to offset that liability, especially since with a new extension you have to rely on clickthroughs from search engines and links rather than someone typing the URL in anyhow. There is a nice site at FilmProcessing.com that shows what I envisioned them being used for.

Yes way! The funny thing was that I was checking for ComputerAnimation.com, which was about to expire (not any more - renewed), then I saw the .us available. So I guess I was kind of lucky!

I seen that the average .us appraisals here have gone up from $0-$10 to around $30-$50. We are on the right track :)

I would rate ComputerAnimation.us considerably higher. The term gets around 50,000 in Overture and 260,000 Google references! It has become very rare to find a name with that much recognition sitting unregistered. I wonder what Mudfence's tool would show for it. Should be higher than both of my photo related names. I think length is almost a non-issue with this one.

Actually duke, I rated ComputerAnimation.us at something like $45-$200. (without the tool) Length was a factor for me.

With the tool I came up with the following:
Domain Name: ComputerAnimation.us
Key Words: Computer Animation
Dictionary Words: 2
Total Word Score: 0.75
Extension relevance: yes
Google Hits: 266,000
Overture Hits: 48,465
Type-ins: 0
Market Rating: 4.0
Length: 17
Extension Rating: 1.5
Length Rating: 0
Popular Rating: 1
Composite: 3.1
High Retail: $1,050
Low Retail: $863
Wholesale: $259

Note: I had no type-in info and also gave it a pretty high MR.
Wouldn't surprise me if it were worth the high retail or more though?
Very impressive OV results.

Cheers!

Thanks for running that Mudfence - that is pretty much what I expected. Might have to wait a while for .US to mature to get those retail figures but computer animation is a rapidly growing field so I could see someone stepping up at anytime to grab that one. Always amazing to see people uncover unregistered gems like this.

These are nice sounding domain names, but with the future of digital photography, how long will they be necessary.

Right now, in the present day they stand a chance.

Digital Photography has only helped the photo finishing business. You just send in your files and they print them professionally (or if it is a local operation you just take your camera card in). Inkjets still can't measure up to lab photos.

FilmProcessing (which actually draws the better search numbers) could be obsolete before Photofinishing.

Duke - Consider that the film processing industry in pretty bad shape. Kodak has developed and marketed digital cameras just to try and stave off market share erosion.

If you want to have something for this market, try these:

digicolor.us
digiprints.us
colorprints.us
digilab.us
digipros.us
digicolorprints.us

All are available, and are shorter and have more snap that the names you mention. They might be really good for other services also, (why didn't I reg them myself?) :)

Thanks Dave. ColorPrints isn't bad, though Color seems like an unnecessary filler word since at least 99% of all prints are color. Though digital is no doubt where the future pf photography lies, I never liked names that are made up by combining two words like digicolor. The search numbers for made-up terms are non-existent so you would have to spend a fortune branding it. That is why I try to stick with generic words and terms that are commonly used. None of the terms above are real words (except color prints), so none appeal to me, regardless of length.

There is a very nice photo processing site at FilmProcessing.com -but nothing at DigiColor.com or ColorPrints.com. I think that is because the former is a much stronger term for the industry (at least as it exists today).
