Why last names? Last names can be companies, organizations, groups, associations, famous people, product names, streets, places (cities, counties, towns), parks, etc. But most importantly, the domains cannot be TMed due to the fact that they are pure popular US surnames.
Any person (especially domainers) would want to own a piece of the internet especially in form of their pure last name. (Having an email [email protected] is also quite popular)
+Potential buyers market is even bigger than the population of US for every surname since same names can be found in Canada, Australia, Europe, etc.

All of these domains were initially registered by others and expired. For EVERY last name, the com,net,org,info,us,biz extensions are taken. In most cases many other less popular extensions like ca,co.uk,cc,de,nu,ws,tv etc. are taken.

-US population is based on the US census. You can search for the last name here: http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/namesearch.html and get the frequency of total US population there. The actual number of people is derived from the current US population of 293,000,000.
-OV is the overture searches for the month of February 2004. It displays the highest number of searches for a keyword containing the last name. If the keyword is impure, the pure OV # for the last name will display in the () following. (*Some names ending with 'S', OVT identifies them as plural. Thus some names ending with 'S' might have results based on the keyword without the 'S'.)
-Google is obviously the number of Google results. (For March 18)
