This is my first Namewinner catch, and I like this one, considering that it seems to be a "lucky" domain and a generally positive and useful name.

Any reactions to this domain name from any of you expert appraisal folks out there?

Sheila - That name does have a positive ring to it, I could see it as a financial planning site of some kind.

None of the other prospers extensions resolve though, no other takers?

Thank you for your input, DNS ... I agree with you about the possible use for this name. I envision this as either an investment, financial planning, or thoughtful type of successful business site with an upbeat approach but without the scams and exaggerations that seem to accompany a lot of the "get rich quick" sites online. It's difficult to strike the right balance between optimism and a conservative approach to financial success grounded in successful investing. I can't really explain why the accompanying sites don't resolve, except that the domain is not so flashy as to attract the scam artists or hopelessly naive investors. That is precisely why I like the name.

I don't see others' opinions as "worthless" at all. Of course, the appraisals can't really predict what a particular domain might be worth to the right customer, and I have received considerably higher offers for domain names that I did not think were as attractive as this one. For some reason that I can't explain, I have had several offers for domain names that music groups have chosen as the names for their bands. I have a sale pending right now that fits in that category. If the sale goes through, I'll let you know more specifically what I'm talking about. I find people's choices to be absolutely fascinating. Of course, I'm prejudiced in that regard. As a psychologist, I'd better find the way people think as interesting, or I wouldn't love my "real job" as much as I do!

I'm curious to know why you see the appraisal process as worthless. Care to share your thoughts on this?

Name - See that little smiley face up there, right after worthless???

That means the comment was made in jest, a jab at the overall reliability of the appraisal process in general.

To try and get a point of reference for my comments, I checked other extensions, and then suggested a possible use for the domain.

If I were to use the magical cool tool, these are the numbers that come back for prosper.com:

High Retail $: $1,250.00
Low Retail $: $937.50
Wholesale$: $281.25


I tend to really believe that an appraisal, professional or otherwise, has almost no relation to what a domain name might actually sell for. I have seen many occassions personally where that has happened.

Sheila summed up my thinking very well:

If you don't mind me asking, how do you get most of your offers? Do they come from your domain page you have in your sig? If so, where does that traffic come from?

Just curious, cause I don't have a domain page up yet but am planning on putting one up soon.

I apologize for the delay in responding, but I've been offline for about 5 days (and in a state of forum withdrawal, I might add!)

Yes, I have received some offers through my web site, but that is pretty new, so I'm not certain quite where the traffic is coming from. I have installed some tracking software and will be able to tell you more soon. I also get some offers from people who just happen to be looking for a particular name that I just happen to own. In addition, I've started doing some active marketing to some of the groups (legal, medical, and psychological groups, primarily) that are likely to be looking for the types of names in which I specialize.

I have been considering offering an opportunity to other forum members who do not yet have web sites to showcase their names to list their names on a special 'buddies' or 'friends' page on my web site. I know that it took me a whole lot longer than I had hoped it would take to get my web site up and running, and I am still completing several of the information pages for the site. I wish that I had had such an opportunity to list my names for a period of time without paying a fortune to some person I didn't know from Adam.

It would be pretty easy for me to add a couple of pages of my friends' domain names to my web site if you (or others) can see a need for a little help getting started. Let me know what you think of this idea. I'm not interested in charging a lot (if anything at all) to allow people to list their names on their own special page or part of a page for a while, and it strikes me that doing so might just help everyone out by increasing the number of folks who stop by looking for one name or one type of name and happen to see other names that they might like, as well.

What types of names do you tend to specialize in? Would an offer such as this help you out until you get your own site up and running? I have not been impressed by the sites I have seen that seem to charge people huge fees just to list their site or sites or that ask for what seems to me to be a large percentage of any sales prices that might result from the domains being listed on someone's site. I would just like to be certain that I can cover any additional costs that I might incur, if any, by offering this option to a reasonable number of friends I meet either through this forum or elsewhere.

If you have a chance to let me know what you think of this idea, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts and feelings. I'm a big believer in the "win-win" approach to sales and marketing and if I can help others get started and increase the traffic to the sites of all who participate, I would love to do so. I also think that there should be enough business out there to keep all of us busy and productive, and the more we all help each other, the greater the likelihood of success for everyone involved.

Would you mind if I asked where you find these places? I've been emailing some that I find in some of the SE's mainly, tried a couple names this way with not much success.

As for your idea, thanks a lot for the offer to put my domains on your page (if you are offering) however I think I will be purchasing RJ's script to do up my page in a few weeks so all should be good

However, I do agree with you on the "win-win" approach to sales and marketing, I think it may benifet each person if many shared the same page as then the page would more than likely get more traffic & have a lot more people looking at the domains.... how this would be ran & achieved I'm not sure.

Yes, I was, indeed, offering this idea to you. :laugh: I will also offer this to a couple of other people I have started to get to know through this forum.

Needless to say, I'm delighted to see that you are going to go with RJ's script, as I obviously believe in it "heartily," so to speak!! I know that it took me at least a month to get almost everything working together, with the combination of HTML and PHP, since I had never used PHP before. I have also never used flash on a site and never worked with a database. Looking back on all of this, I probably should have had my head examined for even thinking of undertaking this project before I had the slightest idea what I was doing. I finally bit the bullet and purchased Macromedia's Studio MX (the educational version) and that helped a great deal for some portions of the project. If you run into any glitches, feel free to ask for help, either from RJ or from anyone else who has used the program. That should save you a lot of time.
If you are delayed for any reason, the offer still stands ... no strings attached. You can list your domain names on my site until you have your site up and running and remove them the minute you're ready to launch if you wish.

As far as how I'm going about locating the right "groups" or firms, it's not really a secret ... I'm starting out by contacting lawyers and physicians I know personally or know through my husband or through one other person. Some of these folks are high profile and I'm not ready to reveal who I'm "courting" right now, but if it works out, I'll let you know.

I'm trying a rather low-key and professional approach and only time will tell how successful this is. The strange thing is that I seem to have attracted some up and coming rock groups who like other of my more generic names ... go figure!!! I've also had some serious inquiries and am in negotiation over some shopping/sales sites that have nothing to do with my main interests. You just never know.

So, what's working for you? Any ideas that you can share? I really think we could all be helping each other out more than we seem to do. There is so much collective wisdom on this site and not all of it is related to grabbing the hottest 2-character domain names in existence (especially since many of us simply can't afford one of those right now).

Tell me, if you will, one or two ideas that seem to have worked for you or that look promising. If you'd rather not do so, I'll understand.

Interesting! Never thought about trying anything "outside" of the internet realm....but I guess why not? Some businesses might not even have a web presence or email so your "helping" them to get one.

I guess you are "very" selective on what domains you do this with tho, would have to be top-tier I would gather?
