I'm just wondering what's new here, London announced it's plans for citywide wireless internet about a month ago and a company called the cloud already has it's citywide wireless networks setup in 9 cities around the UK, it is now in the final stages of testing and will be rolled out over the next couple of weeks. I may be missing something that hasn't already been done, but it seems like it's not all that new.

Well I might have misread it, but from what I can see they are not doing this as an extra. The entire Internet will be wireless in Pune. London may be getting a wireless network, but the majority of people will still be using fibre optics.

I would be amazed if India take business away from their local ISP's and just hands it on a plate to Intel, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm surprised that such services can be implemented so quickly when cellphone companies pay tens of billions of dollars just to get the 3G license.

Probably the city governments got to refund the phone companies or a big lawsuit will commence in no time.

TORONTO, March 7 /CNW/ - TORONTO HYDRO TELECOM INC. (www.thtelecom.ca) today announced plans to provide a blanket of Wi Fi coverage in the downtown core of Canada's largest city, making Toronto the largest Wi Fi zone in Canada ...

The new Wi Fi zone will be implemented in stages. The first phase - located in the City's financial core from Front Street to Queen Street, between Spadina Avenue and Church Street - is planned for completion at the end of June, 2006. The entire Wi Fi zone will be completely operational by December 31, 2006.

EDIT: By the way, that was actually a competition of an earlier plan for a Canada nation-wide wireless broadband network:

Wow this is some good news. I think I will move back to Pune now. :p

It will be interesting to see how Intel plans out the project. After living in Pune for 5 months I know exactly what Pune needs before a wirefree network. Better roads and 24x7 electricity :)

I would be amazed if India take business away from their local ISP's and just hands it on a plate to Intel, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
I wouldn't be surprised at all. Indian Govt wants Intel to setup chip manufacturing plants in India :)

In that case, what good is wirefree internet without 24/7 electricity? I can't view laptops in the dark, tends to strain my eyes.
