I was thinking about buying some domain names that pertain to the next few years (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, etc), is this a recommended strategy or should I not try it?

All the .coms for the years mentioned are gone. You have to think several years in advance, and then of course pay registrations each year. Right now, in my opinion, 2012 domains will prove to be the best investment if you can pick one up in almost any extension, based upon predictions by some people about what will happen that year. Only time will tell if they are right.
General recommendation: pass

not if the domains are sold before the "event"--think 1999.

What I've found out for the best niches is find a hobby of your's that you enjoy and know a bit about.

Using your own hobby has several advantages:
- You know what people in that hobby are looking for
- You know it so you can easily come up with original content
- You know what keywords people use (for example - some will use gear, some will use supplies, and some will use equipment as secondary keywords).
- You most likely know other people in this niche (similar forums)
- You know what that niche needs for an online presence - what's missing and what's over done?

For exmaple, say you're into model trains. You know O is the popular scale with serious collectors and N and HO are not as popular (but extremely popular with kids)so you could look for "OScaleModelTrains" and related domains and then quickly get a site up on it. While others are thinking "Hey, HO has farm more google searches" you can quickly get in and build up sites for O scale.

Think I can make some money before 2012's events with my TwoThousandEleven dot-com? :)

Time-sensitive domains cannot be long term investments...
