Another hairbrained speculation of mine: Would't it help to re-register names with the registrar that was dropping the name?
(except for network "ripoff" solutions of course).
I realize the names are probably all deleted the same way, but maybe you could get a name sooner this way if the registrar wanted to keep the renewal? Excuse my ignorance....
