Recession and domaining

My personal thought on this..

Some of the domainers may drop out this business – those who are not making any money but were collectors (They think of themselves) who are just supporting a hobby with money they have.

Some of the domainers may be forced to sell the domains for living expenses etc. (Sand but if they were to be laid off etc..)

End result: I am feeling any one that is not making money of domaining or websites will get out and the prices of domains will fall.
-- mainy the ones that do not make money.
-- And the pressure will drive the prices down..


What do you think?

I know in the next 2-3 months I am going to let over 40 domains drop, maybe as many as 60 (roughly 15%-20% of my portfilio) plus dozens more in the 6 months after that. Just this morning I flagged about 15 to not renew.

My strict rule is:

If I'm not using it and it isn't making enough to pay for the registration fee then it gets sold or dropped.

That may be a best suggestion to lot of us..
And many people will follow that.. (Best is to sell for as much as you can)
As the good old saying - ones trash is treasure for another.
Some domains may surprise you with what you can get.

I can tell you people that wouldn't accept good offers 3-12 months ago are now coming back to me and asking less than I even offerered them so they can sell their names.

This industry is not really in buy mode at the moment but if you have money now is a great time to be a buyer.

I've tried to sell many of my domains and I've had absolutely no bites.

I'm always looking to buy and I agree, it might turn oiut to be a great time to buy but I need to be extremely strict with what I buy. An OK domain dropped the other day and is available for a reg fee now, I don't know if I want to pick it up or not.

I agree with you and Johnn.
It's only my personal opinion but I see everyday this crisis bring new people to invest money in web.
Today I receive the same offers I've received during the LLLL.com boom...this crisis bring more people to invest in domain names.

I agree that revenue is a major factor, But I also think it depends on the domain, Some brandable domains for example have good value but don't make a dime all year.... For me, it's a judgment call of which ones I want to let go.

I can agree with that, I have 5-10 domains that have no value, are not developed, and are not bringing in much (if any) revenue but I do not plan on letting them drop since if some new technology takes off, they'll be worth a good amount.

As for "brandable" - that is a hard one to catch. Almost anything is brandable so you'd nee dto find something brandable and might be in demand.

There will still be a market for quality or "rare" names... but they will sell for cheap compared to the previous years though.

I would also expect online scamming and fraud rates to explode as people get more desperate. This will also make people reluctant to buy and/or sell names unless its a huge, escrow-worthy transaction.

You need to really run the business and look for buyers.
Defending Obama or McCain would not help the business (In some cases it may hurt your business due to political conflict with potential buyers).

I agreed that the sale prices are not as good as before but what the heck! a sale is a sale!

No offence to anyone but it is plain stupid to let the domains expire after one year or so. Why did you registered then? The trouble is that most of the domainers are too lazy to develop their assets.

What I'm doing is to check if the domain can be sold or makes any reasonable revenue within first 6 months. This is enough to see which ones are good and which ones are flops. If a domain won't make enough revenue or it won't sell then starting from month 6 or 7, I start developing them. It takes 2-3 months (usually a PR update cycle) to get some traffic and rankings to any website and then you have another 2-3 months to find the right buyer and to sell the website.

Websites are sold faster and better than domains and if you are lucky and sell 3-4 websites from a bunch on 20 you have developed, then not only you recovered your costs but you made a nice profit as well.
