i see some domains in the REDEMPTIONPERIOD with expiration dates in 2004 and even 2005. should I assume they are registered till then or not.

no. they temporarily add a year for expiration on names during redemption. The whole system is screwey, do not believe your eyes. I have seen names on hold that don't expire until september. Dns is broken, we just have to deal with it.

so does that mean if it says redemption period , the process prior to the delete period has started - no matter what the final expiration date says

It can be renewed during redemption period by the owner for $149 - but most likely will not. Wait till PendingDelete shows up.
