Not sure which Forum I should post this question in...
but it relates to Auctions - so thought it should maybe be
in an Auction area....

absolutely feel free to move it - if you want it elsewhere...
smile....

I heard that SnapNames was going to be letting members
test a new service for sellers to directly auction their own
names...

is anyone here in that testing phase there ??

any news on when that will be open to all sellers ??

thanks in advance...

It's open to all the sellers now, I've checked it recently:

- you need to move at least 20 domains to snapnames registrar, which costs $6.71 per domain and extends it for one year
- their commissions are rather high, 20% for domains worth up to $1000, min commission $25

Still its probably worth it if you know your domains will sell for at least 20% than here.

but remember snapnames is not heaven, shit names that you have not been able to sell anywhere else will also not sell there.

You can find this out by doing a whois look, but I'd like to know if Snapnames indicates if the domains are public auction vs expired auction, anybody know?

Also, are these without reserves?

You can set any reserve you like, even $1529, but the auction starts with the reserve. Which is frankly a bit of drawback, because if the reserve is too high no one will enter the action, but if it's low you might not actually get as much as you want for it, which is a risk..

Domains appear in an Exclusive Portfolio Partners Download list, Search on our homepage and in a targeted email. Same bidding structure, same rules. They are listed similar to expired names, but because the reserve pricing tends to be higher, buyers can tell a subtle difference.

I'm still reluctant either to list some of my domains there or not... what do you think?

I think if you're going to list a 4-5 figures domain it's better to start with the regular $60, or $99 reserve to get as many as possible people into the auction and receive the maximum bids, but I'm afraid it might actually end up at low amount.

For decent generic domains the auction can sometimes reach 2-3 times what it would sell here ;)

I would always go for a low reserve if selling a 4-5 figure domain. You need to get as much potential buyers as you can. The domain is worth that much money, so actually you only need 2 final buyers competing for your domain right?

Yes, theoretically, but you have no control over the auction and you're obliged to sell it at the ending price, so if for some awkward reason the auction ends up at half the price.. and you also pay ~15% fee :undecided:

Also I'd like to know how differently would people bid knowing it's not an expired domain. Even if you use the standard reserve, they can identify it by whois.

That's what I think... most of the names from their private portfolio auctions are not good at all (IMO). Exposure is good, but if the names aren't good they won't sell fast.

Thanks for the info Michael, With the auction starting at the reserve price, I cant figure out why they set it up this way, you want to keep bidders interested with a low starting price, so they will enlist in the auction. I agree that setting a low reserve is a risk, your really gambling on what you worked so hard for.
