That's very true or else I would have not gotten some of the domains I have. Thank goodness. I'm sure there are a lot of gems I've overlooked and I know there is b/c they ended up registered the following month or two and I was hitting myself wishing I'd registered it. Then again you can't register everything you like.....or can you (buydomains).

I'm with icehole on those two - wouldn't have regged them period. Are you sure someone actually had a Snap on those or used a drop service, or were they just manually registered?

That was my question... I saw that these names had expired and were registered by 6 a.m. EST or earlier, so I made my post looking for someone who might say; 'I got one of them using Snap, or whatever'

Sometimes snapnames, namewinner, drop lists, and the plain desire to find a good name can drive a person to go after a name and in turn drive other people to go after those domains as well. I think lots of great names are overlooked b/c people only use overture as a guage for good domains. Domainduck has domain speculation down in the fact that he's not just only looking for keywords and an overture score but he's looking at the future and a potential use. Cause let's face it we are the "jingle makers" of the internet like people are in advertising on television.

As far as a cashless society goes and as much as I fear it's implications in some regards it will become a reality whether we welcome it with open arms or not. I still like holding gold in my hands and knowing it's mine though

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question. The names I had in mind are names were sold by one of my friends, a longtime chaser. Its not really my business to post his domains and sales on the forum.

Needless to say, my original point remains valid. during the dot-com bubble, mediocre domains were often purchased by overly optimistic companies for absurd prices. Domains that couldn't bring $4,000 now occasionally sold for 100, or 150k during that time period.

let me give you an example of a name that isn't "crap" but still sold for an insane amount of money. ForSaleByOwner.com sold during the height of the dot-com era for almost a million. What do you think that name would bring today? Nuff said.

ForSaleByOwner.com is not a good example. There are too many trademark issues to value it correctly. But, Dragon you are right. We all know that it was different in 98 and 99.

BigFart made a point that you ignored. It was not the money or the name - It was the negotiation that stood out in his mind.

The initial offer was $5k. The selling price was $125k.

That's a true story. I paid my taxes. What name doesn't matter.

I agree. My cousin, who lives in the Dominican Republic, was offered $1,000,000 during the height of the dot-com bubble for a mediocre portal that he made for his country. He turned it down, only to let the domain (aguaita.com) expire a few years later.
