Still doing mistakes in domaining?

I am not experienced domainer but having doing domaining part-time for about 2 or 3 years.

It seems to me I am still doing mistakes even though I have learnt from previous mistakes.

For examples, some domains I got only a few months ago seems now radiculous and I wonder why I end up buying such names.


Are you still doing mistakes after years of experience in domaining?

And I dare to say this... we're ALL still making the same mistakes. Yes, even Rick Schwartz and Rick Latona. Again. And again. And again. Why? Because we're human.

a mistake is like you mis-spell the domain when registering or don't read all the letters correctly when backordering a domain, or when you fail to check stats properly...etc those are what i would consider mistakes.

regging names based on a 'feeling', hunch or instinct are sometimes fruitful...sometimes not. though often when not, it's because of an unwillingness of the domainer to pursue the "dream".

the dream in his mind when he/she "though of the domain" and all the visions of success therein.

a mistake can be "letting" a domain drop too soon.

as you say, been in the biz 2-3 years part-time.

which could equate to....some of the names you acquired haven't reached maturity yet, but you drop them after 2 years and some else gets it and sells it 3 years later for huge profit.

meaning you may have to hold a domain 6-10 years, possibly longer before realizing a roi....that's called "domain investing"

the "domain flippers" are "short-sellers".

they buy to turn over in short time with small profit expectations

when you figure where you fit, then you'll know how to buy for the roi time frame.

We've "flipped" certain domains well (or not so well, when realizing that a 100% return may have actually been a 300% return in 18 months)... and made many of those late night hand-reg errors...

I agree. Biggedon made a good point. We do drop domains more easily during this time of credit crunch. But now I am focussing on turn over (reasonable) than long term investment.

I still make mistakes, but fewer than in the past - most of the time it's dropping domains because I don't have the time to pursue my idea is Biggedon says.
Fortunately my successes more than offset my mistakes

As time goes on you minimize your mistakes because you realize at least some of the errors in your subjective view of the value of domains and how it doesn't align with enough of the market. It's safe to say everyone's made mistakes at this, and those of us who began self-taught surely began making a ton of them. I look back and did get SOME decent domains in my first 9 months but didn't make a single sale, and overall the avg quality of domains I was registering then vs. what I register now is worlds different, and that was 5 years ago even, when there was plenty more quality domains available to be had. The thing to remember is get ONLY the best...don't just get good domains. It may take more time and effort but a portfolio of only "good" domains with just a few great ones is going to sit around gathering dust.
