The first domain ever reged?

Hi,
I was thinking today to myself.. What was the first domain ever registered? I have to do an internet presentation at UNI, and I thought it would be a good way to start the presentation. “the internet started way back in *year *. The first domain ever registered was *domain * registered by *company or person*.

Just wondered if any of you new the answer?

ARPA created Jan-1-1985 so it is quite inpossible for someone to have register a .NET name at day one.

First domain ever was DEC.com during FEB 85 for what I remember, although whois shows later reg date, followed by some others like BERKELEY.EDU or SYMBOLICS.COM as mensioned above.

At that time the NIC did not keep accurate records but for what I remember DEC.com was the first one.

FYI, (D)ARPA was created back in the 1950s...
gTLDs were introduced in late (Oct.) 1984., and nic.nordu.net was THE FIRST ROOT SERVER and it was created on day 1.
So i dont see what's impossible here :-O

I remember reading an article once that stated that "THINK.COM" was the first domain ever registered... but then who believes everything they read! I'm prepared to bow to your collective knowledge...

symbolics.com is generally accepted as the first ... technically, one could debate that not to be so (ie. dec.com for example is claimed to be somewhat older, but being that the history is so murky, varying definitions of registration, etc ...

symbolics.com is the best to go with when discussing the "first domain" and documentation for it is well supported.

One could get technical and find other domains - TLDs themselves are domains - don't think so? Do a whois on COM ...

At some point one has to draw a line ... many folks knowledgeable about domain names consider symbolics.com to be the first.

http://gatekeeper.dec.com would be the first search engine for all purposes.
http://gatekeeper.dec.com/cgi-bin/grep-index?viagra returns zilch but
http://gatekeeper.dec.com/cgi-bin/grep-index?linux returns a gazillion.
