.tl is open for business

Just to let the cat out of the bag -- .tl is now available for registration by the public. See www.nic.tl

I scoured the TOS, and there is no registrant restriction by country. Also, having registered some domains, there is an easy account "push" feature, which should make buying and selling these domains a breeze.

Their ccTLD used to be .tp, but they have been converted their pre-existing .tp registrations to .tl these past few months. Just today, the registry opened for outside registration.

A good many English dictionary words are ripe for the picking. I snagged quite a few great ones.

This just started happening (I registered ~25 domains already, and trust me, it did work previously). I emailed their Director of IT, and I'm sure they will resolve it shortly.

A bit of caution people, the location is indeed in very volatile territory - Indonesia invaded East Timor as recently as 2002. So I would not pour $$$$ into this virtual locale.

What's the precedent for this? Does ICANN turn off a ccTLD if the name changes, or do current registrants have grandfathered rights to the domain even if the country no longer exists?

Yeah i agree and that area is pretty small so not much value , not more then $250 i guess.

as far as I know, ICANN does not govern ccTLDs in general.

Then the TLD will be phased out. That can take a long time. The top level domain for the soviet union (.su) is still being phased out.
