transferring out once you win a domain

I guess many may know this ,but seems that once you have won and paid for a domain name at Snapnames it isnt made a simple task to transfer that domain out to your own registrar. I have just wasted a lot of time trying to get an auth code that works, and in the end I ended up being kind of blackmailed into paying $19.90 (3 times what I usually pay) to renew so I can then spend the next year trying to get an auth code that actually works. So I suggest anyone who buys from Snapnames and wants to transfer out starts the transfer process at least 3 months before it expires so you too do not have to pay $19.90 instead of $6.85 for renewals.
