So a couple of days ago I found a domain name that sounded really cool but I decided not to buy it (it was a drop). I thought that it would make an awesome name for my domain/online niche business. I thought that it would be the best name actually.

I kept changing my mind if I should buy it or not. So I decided to sleep on it. Next day I go to register and I can't because some domain from company from Las Vegas that owns 20,000+ domains bought it. So I figured that it will never drop again.

So a couple of days later I go to see if it's taken and it's not so I registered it.

I feel like a million bucks right now.

I guess that particular domain brought in 0 traffic for them. :lol:

I know that people taste domains all the time, anyone else have similar stories?

This happens constantly at many different sites..they are selling the "about to register" lists from the registrars (or doing it themselves through a 3rd party) so when you check a name and don't register it they register it to see if it gets traffic or if someone immediately contacts them to buy it. What site were you using when this occured?

I've experienced this so many times...when you find an available domain register it istantly.

I don't remember the company name. All I know is that I went to register it with GoDaddy, it was available, then I decided not to. Next day I went to register it at GD and it was taken, so I did a whois to see who registered it. Then a couple days later I went back to GD to register it and it was available.

Welcome to domaining... This has happened to me thousands of times over the last seven or eight years. As already mentioned, immediately register anything you find, and if you change your mind afterwards, delete the domain for a refund [assuming Moniker and others still issue credits, I haven't deleted anything in a while].

I never use godaddy to search for name, enom I never had that happen so I use it to search.

Yes, sadly it's quite prevalent. I've had it happen many times including multiple times at Fabulous over the last several years. I trust Fab and keep forgetting they do this. And so it pisses me off big time when they burn me on it -- sure doesn't meet my expectations of business ethics.

I recommend http://iWhois.com. Their CEO is the only one I know to have forcefully and publicly stated that they will never sell their customer's data

Odd, I've never had this issue with GoDaddy - I've checked for availability, and thought about it for a few hours, sometimes even a day or two, and it was still available.

Pf course, maybe that's a sign that the domains I was looking for weren't worth it.

Availability check at GD is not realtime so the false positives are pretty common. I would bet the name was not even available.
