I just received a transfer request from 1&1 for a domain I recently drop-caught.

I haven't sold the domain, so there's no reason I should receive a transfer request. I figured somebody was trying to scam me. But then I noticed something weird. Here's the relevant part of their email:

"1&1 Internet Ltd. has received a request from 1&1 Internet Inc. on behalf of [some guy's name & address] on 08-Dec-2005 for us to become the new registrar of record."

Isn't it strange that a transfer request from 2005 would be reactivated when the domain gets a new owner? Or does that happen routinely with old transfer requests?

Got one too: 03-Aug-2007

A genius in the IT department flushed a bad mail queue.

Ok, this is getting more bizzare by the minute. I received a return receipt for a valid email I sent to GoDaddy on 11/25/2005 !

It seems that these companies migrated to Outlook, importing long email files; the default settings would send out a return receipt or an automated response.

I wonder if there's some nefarious way to exploit this situation ... ;)

Can you check the email headers, and see if there is one referencing outlook.com ?
