I'm looking to build up some backlinks. And I want to make comments (genuine ones - seriously) on blogs.

This allows for the opportunity for me to make my name "Desired Keywords", with my website as whatever site I'm looking to correspond to the two keywords.

Obviously, this works, as I get spam comments on my articles everyday which are evident attempts to take advantage of the very fact that this works.

How can I do this without coming across as a spammer? Is foregoing my link building opportunity my only option?

The default WP setting on comment links is "nofollow". In other words, unless a person clicks on the link itself, you don't get any backlink juice from blog comments.
