If you really want to make the sale public, make it public now BEFORE they talk about a non-disclosure. You can simply say you discussed the deal with colleagues before accepting the deal and before agreeing to a non-disclosure, and what your colleagues say after the fact is out of your control. We can then publish the sale with an asterisk (unconfirmed sale), and you get the bragging rights for the biggest sale! Of course only I will know if it beats creditcards.ca

Sounds like McDonnell Douglas, they use MD in a lot of their literature and they have a tough name to spell. "McDonnell" is that 1 N and 2 Ls or 2 Ns and 1 L or 2 Ns and 2 Ls...

They also have deep pockets.

Very good name. To be honest, if I had to choose between that name and creditcards, I would choose creditcards in a heartbeat.

Adam, for privacy purposes, I would recommend putting a (.), or something to that effect in your mention of the name to avoid this thread getting picked up by a search.

If I were to make a few guesses as to the buyer, something medical came to my head at first, but since the user isn't obvious, here are my speculations as to who it is that is going after the name...

- A politician with the initials MD (just like you did with ZP (.) com... I remember the Forbes article
- Mountain Dew (you never know?)
- McDonalds (they go by MCD in their abbreviations, but they don't seem to own mcd.ca)
- MedNax Inc. (Florida company with $3.49B market cap uses MD as their NYSE symbol)
--> That said, Midland Exploration Inc., headquartered in Montreal, is traded on the CVE, but with a $44.45M market cap, they're not spending high $xxx,xxx on a domain.

But based on others' posts, McDonnell Douglas sounds like a very likely contender, especially since there are at least three misspell opportunities ("Mc" vs "Mac", two n's or one n, two l's or one l), likely leading to much frustration for those attempting to access or email on the spelled-out domain.

BTW, to whatever very gutsy individual this might interest, mcdonnelldouglas (.) ca is available for registration as of this writing.

I was tempted to register it, but a TM approved since 1984 would make this a very risky registration.

Thats the funny thing about domains, sometimes it doesn't always make sense. if you're willing to back up a purchase of md.ca with a good marketing campaign to let the public know its there, then it could still be worth every penny.

I'm still going with my non-profit guess, specifically Muscular Dystrophy. They have a lame domain name now, muscle.ca. And md.ca will be something people will remember and can spell. I think it would benefit them greatly.

How about MD Helicopters, which is alive and well and does use the term MD extensively in their literature. They have deep pockets and I believe was a division or at least owned by McDonnell Douglas hence the MD.

probably too much duplication in effort to keep any of those lines going. I was working in engineering for the MD-80 & MD-90 series commercial jets back then. I was there for first flight of the MD-90, but I think we barely sold any of those things...

yeah, it would be a long term investment, but that could be part of the negotiations, to pay it over time. with fundraising you have to spend money to raise money, and spend big money to raise big money.

That's an excellent point about the languages. It would also allow for email and medical records to be centralized around one domain so as to both have control over information which is exchanged (goodbye privacy), as well as to gain a stream of income by charging doctors to use it, and forcing them to use it, saying it's part of the "modernization" of the medical system.

Something interesting about MD in a domain... on Marketing.com (their business model is something I'm yet to figure out - my instinct is that they're brokering all those beautiful .com's), MD.com has been there for years, probably because nobody can figure out what the heck to do with it.
