Domain with NetSol - no other status data. Why?

I thought a domain entered REDEMPTION status upon its expiration date.

It goes into RGP when the registrar hits the "delete" button. Then the *registry* puts it into Redemption status for the 30 days, and pending delete thereafter.

The registrar can hit the delete button at any time, before, on or after the expiry date.

So if your looking at name that is in redemption period, is it safe to say that it will go into "pending delete" 30 days after the updated date? (assuming the owner doesn't renew)

Thanks George. However, the name above has expired more than a month ago and still hasn't entered the Redemption period. Or did I misunderstand your reply?

It will go into redemption period approx 40-45 days after expiry. It will stay in redemption period for 30 days then go into Pending Delete cycle. Name will become available 6 days after going into pending delete

It may take up to 45 days before registrar sends the "delete" command to the registry. ---> Domain status: (REGISTRAR HOLD)

It then goes to the RGP for additional 30 days. ---> Domain status: (REDEMPTION GRACE PERIOD)

After 30 days, the status is changed to PENDING DELETE for 5 days.

Finally, the domain is dropped on the 6th day.

TC, you're right. 45 days is a loose rule. Registrars are not bounded to hit the "delete" command to the Registry 45 days after the domain was expired.

Here's what happens:
When a domain expired, the Registry automatically charges a registrar another 1 year renewal fee. The registrar then has up to 45 days to send the "delete" command to the registry to get refund for that charge. After 45 days elapsed, the registrar is not entitled for a refund. So, they might decide to keep the domain (especially the good ones).

Hmmm... the plot thickens. So since Network Solutions and Verisign are one and the same (the domain is a .com) they can hold the domain in expired mode indefinitely? Like, a purgatory of domains?

BTW the name is really not a good one, just a name I am interested in.

I notice Netsol and Register.com are hoarding good expired domains. (Perhaps for WLS???)

In this case, the domain is not considered good by any standards, other than that it was registered in Feb of 1999. Perhaps NetSol filter out domains with certain valuation parameters, including age of registration?

I'm afraid so.

But still, eventhough the domain status is changed to REDEMPTIONPERIOD, there's still a possibility for the owner to renew it.

Read the following:
PENDINGRESTORE: The registry sets this status after a registrar requests restoration of a domain that is in REDEMPTIONPERIOD status. The domain will be included in the zone. Registrar requests to modify or otherwise update the domain will be rejected. The domain will be held in this status while the registry waits for the registrar to provide required restoration documentation. If the registrar fails to provide documentation to the registry within 7 calendar days to confirm the restoration request, the domain will revert to REDEMPTIONPERIOD status. The domain status will be set to ACTIVE only if the registrar provides documentation to the registry within 7 calendar days to confirm the restoration request.

Perhaps I need to add that the domain is not in the zone files, in other words only the WHOIS yields any information. Running ping/traceroute does not work as the name is not in the DNS.

Running dig I get this output (partial):

The SOA means something I am not familiar with, normally it would say NS and then the Nameservers. But the output above signifies that the domain's status is not normal.

nm, I found the following:

» NS : Name Server Lookup. This the Primary/Secondary Domain
Name Server for your domain from the .FM Root DNS. If
The information from your DIG does not match what is on the
WHOIS the problem may be with the Root FM records.

» SOA..........: Source of Authority or Start Of Authority. This is the
records on your hosting companies Name Servers. Without
this record your domain will not resolve. If NS Lookup shows
the correct Primary/Secondary Name Servers, but you see no
SOA records listed. Then you should contact your hosting
company and inform them you see no SOA record on their
Name Servers for your domain.

OK, so FINALLY its status changed to REDEMPTIONPERIOD on the 2nd of April! That's 38 days after the "expiration date".
