Hii,

I am checking for the avaliability of a couple of domains...I generally use register.com ( but most of us here know that they are having problems with their setup ), lately, I have been using truewhois.com ( but since almost 24 hours, their script also isn't working ) ... so i tried internic.net and dotregistrar.com whois to check for the avaliability...!

But the who is info...that is showing up for a couple of domain i am checking is very confusing ( atleast for me :( ) ...
Here is the info I am getting :

domain1 :

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: DOMAIN1.COM
Registrar: DOTSTER, INC.
Whois Server: whois.dotster.com
Referral URL: http://www.dotster.com/help/whois
Name Server: NS1.somenameserver.NET
Name Server: NS2.somenameserver.NET
Updated Date: 05-nov-2001

>>> Last update of whois database: Sun, 28 Jul 2002 04:48:52 EDT <<<

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and
Registrars.

domain2 :

Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: DOMAIN2.COM
Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net
Referral URL: http://www.opensrs.org
Name Server: SCA02.SEC.DNS.EXODUS.NET
Name Server: NS1.somenameserver.COM
Name Server: NS.somenameserver.COM
Updated Date: 05-nov-2001

>>> Last update of whois database: Sun, 28 Jul 2002 04:48:52 EDT <<<

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and
Registrars.

What does that info mean...its confusing as i mentioned..in a sense...it says ...the domain is avaliable for registration, but also gives the names servers for the same...also, no info on creation and experation dates...??

Thanks for any feedback

Cheers
:)

internic shows the data the registry has, namely the nameservers for the domain and the registrar, each registrar maintains their own whois database with registrant details in it.

the output isn't saying its available to register, its simply informing you that there is a choice of registrar and not just network solutions (who had a monopoly in the past).

These names are definately not available for registration. When a name shows up at internic.net, it's in the root zone files, which means it's currently registered.

This confusion doesn't happen with a thick registry like .info.
