I used to use Whois.net a lot in the early days (2000), then they removed their Deleted Domains service near the end of the year.
I wrote them an email complaining and asking why they had removed it, and then a couple of days later they apologised and put it back up again!!!
However, they have totally removed it since the end of 2001.

I used Whois.net up to about 2 months ago, when they were obviously bought out by Verio 
We used to call it the "Domain Name Grave Yard", however I snagged good names regularly and I really liked the options for searching.... "begins with", "ends with", and "contains".
I have yet to find another expired domain name search that offers these options......
It was an excellent resource that I do miss.......
