is there a service to check the whois, and be able to see , how long the current owner owned the domain, and who were the previous owners of it, i think that would be handy to have that if purchasing abig dollar domain.
to make sure it was not stolen ,,

I use whois.sc, for only $15 you get that feature...only thing is, it cannot tell you the whois history of every single domain...just for ones people have looked up there and it has cached.

If there's a specific domain you want, I'd be happy to check for you...but I would def recommend the service.

Also be sure to do some searches on the domain and the current owner to check out any potential issues. I used Whois.sc and a search that led me to a DNforum posting to save me from buying a $5,000 stolen domain...read the story here.

Whois.sc is a cached system and I would not rely on it completely. It gets so many hits that in my opinion, it wouldn't be able to keep to registrars' whois query frequency guidelines, so if it's using proxies to get around it, that's technically another ethical problem.

If you're serious about whois, get yourself a proper client that will query rs.internic.net:43 first and will then refer to the registrar of record in real time.

Simple answer: Install Cygwin and the whois package if you don't have a *nix box.

Another tip is to check the domain's history at archive.org which can often give you an indication of previous ownership.
