When I change the permalinks my posts doesn't work.. And, when it does work it has a string in the url that I do not want, but I'm having trouble figuring out how/where to change it.

Need help asap

You'll have to edit it in Settings / Permalinks > Choose Custom Structure and add the code. I use "/%postname%" for my websites. This makes each post like this > mydomain.com/posttitle

Hey,

I've done that.. Problem is, the theme i'm using continues to add /portfolio/ in front of everything I do. I need to find where this is happening at and take it out. I can't change the category name because the theme is based off portfolios, and i'm not using it for a portfolio site.

You can use Crimson Editor and change the "portfolio" to a name you want.
Here's how to search editable files using Crimson Editor:
[Top Menu] Search > Find In Files - a dialogue box will open with the options below:
Find What: portfolio
Folder: select the theme folder
check the box "Look in subfolders" and hit search.
Results will show you all the files with the name portfolio in the code. You'll have to use a html editor or text editor to open the php files and change the portfolio name in the code.
