would it help if I went to school to understand it? or in the end is it about how much money you have? since you can advertise in local newspapers, search engines (ppc), websites, offline marketing - coupon mail-outs, flyers, etc.. you can get customers from these ways but it depends on how much money you have to spend, your product, price and if people notice your advertisement. If I was to go to school and understand marketing what more could I learn?

You would learn lots more. I'm glad I got a degree in marketing and advertising. If you want to make this your business then certainly think about rounding out your knowledge. What you learn there will also apply to other avenues as well. Really, any extra education goes a long way.
You will also be able to network with your fellow students - networking can be more valuable than anything else you do. Learning how to be a professional at that one thing may do more for you than any money you spend elsewhere.
In the end think of it this way - pay someone else to do your marketing and advertising or develop most of it yourself and save $$?

If you want to go to school, if it's important to you to get a degree than you should go. If you just want to learn about marketing, especially web marketing, then you have all you need at your fingertips (the web). Just put in the time, evreything you need to suceed is out there and it's free (except for the hard work).

Books are better than a school. Classic is Philip Kotler, new wave i.e. Seth Godin. Disadvantage of school is they teach you at the speed of the slowest pupil. Also teachers are usually not so well paid, so basically teachers are people they are teaching you to do something which they can not really do.
