Canadian Internet Governance Forum 2026, also known as CIGF 2026, will take place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026 in Ottawa, Canada.

The event is scheduled to be held at the Ottawa Art Gallery, with participation available both in person and online.

CIGF is Canada’s premier multistakeholder forum for digital policy dialogue. It brings together voices from government, the private sector, civil society, academia, the technical community and end-user groups to discuss the public policy issues shaping the future of the internet in Canada and globally.

About CIGF

The Canadian Internet Governance Forum is a national initiative connected to the global, United Nations-led Internet Governance Forum.

Its mandate is to foster bottom-up, inclusive, open, transparent, non-commercial and multistakeholder digital policy dialogue. The goal is to help identify Canadian priorities, support informed public discussion and ensure that Canadian perspectives are represented in wider global internet governance processes.

CIGF’s mission is to give the Canadian internet community a place to discuss the most pressing public policy issues facing the internet and to explore common solutions based on shared values.

Why this event matters to the domain industry

Although CIGF is broader than a domain-only event, it is highly relevant to DNForum readers.

Internet governance directly affects the environment in which domain names, DNS, registries, registrars, hosting providers, cybersecurity teams, online businesses and digital policy professionals operate.

For the domain industry, CIGF 2026 is especially relevant because discussions around digital rights, cybersecurity, AI governance, data privacy, online safety, digital sovereignty, internet resilience and multistakeholder governance can influence the wider policy framework around online identity, digital trust and internet infrastructure.

Topics likely to be relevant

The detailed 2026 agenda has not yet been published. However, the organiser has indicated that CIGF 2026 will explore technology policy issues such as AI governance, digital rights, cybersecurity and digital sovereignty.

Based on previous CIGF editions and the current event positioning, topics of interest may include:

  • AI governance and responsible technology policy
  • Digital rights and online freedoms
  • Cybersecurity and internet resilience
  • Digital sovereignty and Canadian digital policy
  • Internet governance and multistakeholder cooperation
  • Data privacy and online trust
  • Platform accountability and online safety
  • The role of the technical community in public policy
  • Critical internet resources and digital infrastructure
  • Canada’s priorities in global internet governance
  • The relationship between domestic digital policy and global IGF processes

Who should attend or follow this event

CIGF 2026 should be of interest to:

  • Domain registries and registrars
  • ccTLD operators and registry service providers
  • DNS and internet infrastructure professionals
  • Hosting and cloud providers
  • Cybersecurity and abuse mitigation teams
  • Digital policy and internet governance professionals

Connection to the global Internet Governance Forum

The Canadian Internet Governance Forum is part of the wider Internet Governance Forum ecosystem.

The global IGF brings together stakeholders from different groups as equals to discuss public policy issues related to the internet. While IGF discussions do not create negotiated binding outcomes, they help inform policy-making, encourage information exchange and support cooperation between governments, the private sector, civil society, the technical community and academia.

CIGF provides a Canadian space for this type of dialogue and helps surface Canadian priorities for the global internet governance agenda.

Why DNForum readers should watch CIGF 2026

Domain names are part of the internet’s core addressing and identity layer. Policy discussions around online trust, cybersecurity, platform accountability, AI, privacy, access and sovereignty can all affect how domain names and internet services are governed, protected and used.

For registrars, registries, brokers, hosting companies and domain investors, CIGF 2026 offers a useful window into Canadian policy thinking and broader debates that may affect the future of the open, secure and interoperable internet.
