Tried to post this under Domain News, but it wouldn't post, so I am posting it here instead:

The NY Times reports that about 250,000 .TEL domain apps were received, and that 70,000 unique .TEL domains were registered, on the first day of general availability.

Article:
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/25/for-whom-the-tel-tolls/

More from article:

"Telnic is also working on iPhone and BlackBerry applications that would let users update their contact information and locations from their smartphones."

TELNIC announced today it is up to 100,000 active .TEL registrations in only the first 36 hours from general availability launch:

"London, United Kingdom – Thursday 26th March, 2009 – Telnic Limited (www.telnic.org), the registry operator for the new communications-focused .tel top level domain (TLD), today confirmed that total registrations from businesses and individuals worldwide had surged past the 100,000 mark just 36 hours after General Availability opened."

I've no doubt the numbers are real. But what does this say about success of the TLD, other than pure numbers? How many were tasting, how many will ask for refunds when they find out they can't host a web site on these domains? How many will let the domains expire after a year because they can't sell them? Someone already sells a pack of Carolina city .tel's for $299. Good luck with that.

This forum is full of history lessons, all you have to do is dig them up.

Rather than displaying E-mail address obfuscated why not set up a contact form

I just don't get it anymore... Even if you had sex.tel, then what? Does a search engine exist for these domains, or some form of a directory? Is one in the making?

So I assume there will be some BIG auction venues featuring .tel fairly soon? Flowers.tel for $200K?

lol
sorry, it would have to be E-T.tel , you can't have LL

also, which i think was weird, you can't have NNN, so no 123.tel etc

only letters AND numbers if you want numbers

Search engines are already indexing .tel domains. Two of my .TEL domains appeared listed in Google searches within 24 hours of the data existing on the .TEL sites. Since they are both single word keyword domains, they are being ranked pretty well already in Google, and will likely be by other search engines.

There does exist the TELODEX .TEL directory, so yes .TEL specific directories are beginning to pop up. There is also a .TEL forum and other sites.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Adam. Would you be willing to PM the examples so that I could take a look? As a learning experience I like to experiment with SEO and new TLDs. I messed around with a .travel a while back, and had some small success with it.

You can find my sites in the TELODEX .TEL directory under the Religion section to use for examples of what you can do with .TEL domains. Hope they can be of help. There are other examples in that dir and Developer tools are listed on the telnic.org site.
