So, I saw on DNJ earlier today that sportsbookreview (.ca) just sold for $8,725.

There appears to be an established site on the .com. I wonder if the purchase had anything to do with that.

In any case, I can't seem to comprehend how a name like that was able to fetch high $x,xxx, when most of us here are pushing half decent names for $xx and $xxx.

That established site you refer to is SBR and the top sportsbook review site on the web. I am unsure if there is a relationship between the .ca domain sale and the .com but that aside getting the .ca would give you instant credibility (hugely important if you're a review site) not to mention the SEO benefit you would get from getting the category killer in the niche. Although "sportsbook review" doesn't get a ton of searches within Canada in itself, if you target the different books plus all the other long tail traffic you will get, it all adds up.

dcristo - I agree, there have been other sales like this in the past where the .ca matches the same name as an existing site on a .com or even a .de. On the face of it, it seems like a high price but to the buyer probably a drop in the bucket if they are a sportsbook operation.

One of the worst cases I've seen of this was surveymonkey.ca for $500. The owner could have gotten a LOT more for it.
