Hello,

I just registered sontpsp.com. My PSP site gets about 15-20 hits from search query typos of this nature (sont psp, sont psp information etc.).

The name sonypsp.com has overture with extension of almost 1,000.

No overture shows up for the typo, but I know it is a valid one as I get traffic from it.

You may ask why sontplaystation.com and sontplaystation2.com are unregistered: well, if someone is going to mis-type the Y for a T in "sony", then they will either do the same with the Y in "playstation", or just realise their mistake and correct it. Whereas, after the mis-spell in "sony", the user does not return to the same part of the keyboard so they won't have realised their mistake. Also, "sontpsp" contains no TM issues, as "sontplaystation" does.

Or maybe I'm wrong, that's just my theory.

I don't know if it gets traffic yet, but it would be cool if someone could tell me if they think it was a wise registration, and maybe estimate if it will get traffic or not.

Luke

The question of whether this registration was wise is probably better handled in the Legal Issues folder...

What ever gave you the idea that people can't claim legal rights on typo name?

Typosquatting off a trademark is cybersquatting. This is a clear cut case, as you are using it in a way solely to earn money off the existence of someone else's trademark. Sony has a clear case against you, especially since you declared in public your intent to make money off of people looking for that trademarked service.

Here in the US you'd additionally be in violation of the anticybersquatting act, for which rulings have been made against people intentionally cybersquatting, with huge fines as a result. Check your local laws for something similar, but then UDRP regulations are everywhere by nature of the agreement your domain registrar has with ICANN, so they can get you on that if nothing else.
