I don't know much about trademarking a name! So if this question sounds lame to you, please excuse me. I looked up a particular TM on USPTO.gov. "It shows the TM to be abandoned and dead status." Does this mean I can now attempt to TM register this exact name? It has been dead since March, 2002.

Thanks, Gary T

You might use the "check status" feature of the uspto website to gain further insight into why it is not a live registration (assuming that it is a registration you are looking at, instead of perhaps an abandoned application).

Trademark registrations are subject to periodic renewal fees and confirmation that the mark is still in use.

Whether someone has allowed their registration to lapse may, or may not, be indicative of whether they have abandoned the mark itself.
