Wow - I don't claim to be an expert on all things internet, but I was amazed how many of the top 19 sites I was unfamiliar with:
live.com
baidu.com
rapidshare.com
qq.com
hi5.com
I couldn't tell you what any of these sites is about, but each of them gets more traffic than eBay (#20)!
qq.com - Dunno what this is..
thanks owntag! That is great!
By the way, if anyone needs the huge file splitted into smaller files (as excel only opens a MAX 65535 lines, so there will be ~935k domains missing!), send me a PM.
Wordpad will definately open this. I believe Excel 2007 limits the rows to 1 million now.
Alexa stats are far too flaky to make this useful.
owntag, thanks...great find.
Let me see if I can add some value also. A few random thoughts:
These are obviously popular sites because people find them useful and they satisfy some online need/demand of their users. That is key. Once you can isolate what is in demand on the web you can begin to offer it as well with your existing businesses or even create a new business to cater to that demand.
Also when you see sites like yahoo.co.jp , google.de , and google.co.in near the top of the list, your belief that these countries are creating a huge online presence is confirmed even more...this would also seem to bode well for cctld's and "country centric" web sites.
etc...etc...
