Anti-snipe change to Auction rule...

I think we need to once again revisit the auction rule

Rule #4 of dnforum auctions.

4) Must specify end time, time zone, and date. NO "ends *hours after last bid" allowed. You may have a buy it now price.

Specifcally the "NO "ends *hours after last bid"

All the current system does is cost the seller possible rev and give the name to the fastest finger...not to who is prepared to pay the most. We are capitalists here for the most part ..I think...and that is not in the "spirit of the game" in my opinion.
The seller would still have to post an end time but should be allowed to invoke an anti-snipe rule (By stating "Anti-Snipe rule in effect") that would extend the auction ...(perhaps) in the event of bids in the last 5 minutes extending the auction to 15 minutes after the last bid...

These are not hard to monitor because every post has a time stamp...

I can say I would take part in a lot more auctions (as a bidder) if this was allowed. Now it is a waste of time when it is the fastest finger and not the best bid that wins the auction.

Well the current system does need an overhaul.

I think you're in the best position to suggest a workaround Jim.

How about a 1 hr extension if a bid is placed within the last hour?

So basically you're suggesting we add a provision to the rule to allow an anti-snipe clause - whereby sellers could state an end time, but give allowance for snipe bids to extend the auction.

Yes...seller would still have to state an end time and it only kicks in if there are bids in the last 5-10-15 (whatever is decided) minutes before the stated end time.
When in "Anti-Snipe" the auction would end 15 minutes after the last bid.
Seller should have to state it in the original post that "Anti-snipe" in effect.
That way we aren't taking snipes away from those who still like the snipe auctions with the exact end times.

I think the simplest thing to do is if you really want the domain and don't want anyone else to get it, just buy it at BIN price or send the domainer an offer. This "Anti-Snipe but Snipe for 15 minutes but Only if Flower Bloom on Friday" thing is confusing for forum style auctions and people in multiple time zones. It seems like it was cause quite a bit of disagreements.

...it is done all the time....just not allowed for in DNF rules at this time...

Many times a BIN is not posted....

This just helps the best bid win it rather than the fastest finger...

Maybe BINs should be required then? And a reserve price? Seems that work best, that way it's set in stone.

AT YOUR LEISURE, you may also allow for provisions of anti-sniping, so that a bid placed within the last 5 minutes of the auction would extend the auction by an additional 5 minutes to the clock. The standard to this rule, if its not exactly specified by the thread starter is this - 4 minutes remaining, bid placed, 5 minutes get added, so clock gives 9 total minutes till end of auction. If 1 minute or less is remaining, 5 minutes get added, so the clock gives 6 total minutes before auction closes. This is the standard to be used whereby anti-snipe is in place (and ONLY if anti-snipe is in place as would be stated by the auction holder). If anti-snipe is NOT clearly specified, it is not in effect. Anti-snipe is a new procedure in effect as of April 10, 2008 (4/10/2008).
